You can view this article at: http://www.cabinc.org/War_Goodtimes_poverty_tv.htm Historically poor people and the environment have both been viewed from the perspective of what they can produce. This pattern has resulted today in a planet with more people who are struggling for basic survival and an increasing number of endangered and threatened plant and animal species. The World Commission on Environment & Development recently connected the two issues by stating, “Poverty is a major cause and effect of global environmental problems. It is therefore futile to attempt to deal with environmental problems without a broader perspective that encompasses the factors underlying world poverty and international inequality.” What’s happening related to this complex problem globally, nationally, and locally? How do we both protect our environmental resources…. cleaning up the air and water, providing adequate habitat to promote a broad diversity of species and other efforts while also addressing social equity needs…such as assuring that everyone has adequate food, and housing? In this episode we explore these and other questions as we talk about the complex topic of poverty and the environment. In the studio John Borrego is a Professor of Latin American and Latino Studies at the University of California Santa Cruz. He teaches global political economy with regional and local impacts. Roberto Sanchez Rodriguez, an Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of California Santa Cruz, focuses on environmental problems in urban areas. He has worked on transboundary environmental problems on the U.S.-Mexico border and on human dimensions of global environmental change. He is currently examining the implications of the North American Free Trade Agreement for continental environmental issues. Kirsten Liske is the Projects Director at Ecology Action of Santa Cruz. A graduate, with Honors, of the University of California at Santa Cruz in Environmental Studies her work has focused on implementing needed next steps in the areas of hazardous waste and resource management, pollution prevention and the oil recycling industry.
