A child is born into poverty every 43 seconds.   A child is born without health insurance every minute.   Over 40 million Americans are not covered by health insurance of any kind including 9 million children, 90% of whom are living in working families.

For more than half a century the government at the local, state and federal level has played role in providing basic medical care to people who are elderly, disabled or who are living in or near poverty.  The government has not provided health programs for working people.  One of the few exceptions to this is Healthy Families, a program to provide health coverage to the children of working parents.

But this growing health crisis affects middle income working households as well as low and very low-income households.  Insurance rates continue to climb and people who buy their insurance as individuals, not as part of a group, find that as they age they are priced out of the market and lose their insurance.

This episode of the War On Poverty in the 21st Century we call “Health”. We will explore the history of health care in the United States, current programs that work and holes in our health care system and possible policy and programs that could reduce poverty related to health care in the 21st century.

WASHINGTON -- Americans without health insurance are more likely to have poorer health and die prematurely than those with insurance, says a new report from the National Academies' Institute of Medicine. Uninsured patients with colon or breast cancer face up to a 50 percent greater chance of dying than patients with private coverage. Uninsured victims of trauma also are more likely to die from their injuries. Being uninsured for even a year appears to diminish a person's general health.
